This new bio champagne is produced entirely from the grapes coming from 16 hectares of certified organic parcels in Verneuil, in the heart of the Marne Valley, that Lanson acquired in 2011.
In this special vineyard, following the organic practices, grassing is controlled, compaction of soils is reduced, soils are fed with home-made compost and most of all, no herbicides or herbicides are used whatsoever.
The blend is made of 50% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Meunier, with a dosage of 6 g/l and an aging of at least 3 years on lees.
The result is in my opinion such a refreshing champagne, with quite a rich nose and marked fruitiness and salinity in the mouth, that made me want to have more and more of it, under the beautiful sun of Paris in May.
Although it is already being exported, this exclusive new cuvée was officially launched in Paris on 17th May 2018 by Philippe Baijot, President of Lanson and Chef de Cave Hervé Dantan at a lunch by French celebrity Chef Jean Imbert.
During the event, President Baijot commented: “Although we do not usually look to acquire additional vineyards, we were extremely interested in these atypical organic parcels as they are in line with where Champagne is heading. This is for us the beginning of our adventure in the organic world and part of our winemaking philosophy respectful of the environment.”
From his side, Chef de Cave Dantan explained: “We are fully convinced that this is the way to go and that it will be highly beneficial for Lanson, not just for the reduced impact on the environment, but also for the quality of our wines. This vineyard and champagne represent for us an invaluable exercise to experiment organic and sustainable viticultural techniques, to be applied to the rest of our vineyard.”
This means that although Lanson does not envisage to fully convert to organic viticulture, a complex, long and risky approach given its large production volumes, it strongly believes in using sustainable viticultural practices that it is progressively applying in its own vineyard, and is assisting the growers who supply their grapes to the Maison, to do the same.
To better understand, experiment and develop these pioneering practices Lason has hired agroforestry specialist Jerome Courgey, now in charge of the 30 organic parcels and of the whole vineyard.
With this beautiful new champagne, Lanson is proving that its glorious past doesn’t hinder its capacity to look at the future and to always remain contemporary and among the very top Champagne Houses.
I admire that and can only add that Lanson’s future is bright and green, like the logo of this splendid cuvée. I suggest you give it a try as soon as you can, it will be so good for your spirit and for your body!
